Front page design

Out-of-the-box Drupal assumes that your site will be a chain of stories.

The newest stories (or pages or articles or blog entries) get pushed to the front page. I wanted a different layout, so I used a PANEL to create a custom front page. I used a 3-column panel, with a custom pane (check term) for each of the six featured areas. The panes are set to display the summary/teaser for each article. Some of these article pages are used as landing pages, with custom menus on the left to access the next level of content.

To do: Another way to customize the front page, involving theming, code, etc.: http://drupal.org/node/317461
